Cashew Nut Farming: In Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam District, farmers in areas like Vajrapukotturu, Palasa, Mandasa, Kaviti, Kanchili, Sompeta, and Ichchapuram are facing a severe crisis related to cashew nut farming. These regions cover approximately 50 acres of cashew nut plantations, and the livelihoods of many local residents directly or indirectly depend on these farms. However, this year has brought financial hardships due to a significant drop in cashew nut prices.
The primary issue revolves around the substantial decrease in cashew nut prices. Previously, farmers used to earn decent incomes from their cashew nut crops. However, this year’s prices have fallen drastically, causing distress among the local farming community. Farmers are currently forced to sell their cashew nuts for far less than they had anticipated.

This dire situation has prompted protests and appeals from the farmers, who are demanding fairer prices for their cashew nuts. The price decline is impacting the lives of nearly 70% of the cashew nut farmers in this region. Furthermore, those engaged in various related activities connected to cashew nuts are also feeling the economic strain. Earlier in the year, cashew nuts were fetching around Rs. 8,500 per quintal, but the current rates are significantly lower, leading to considerable frustration and financial difficulties among the farming population.
Farmers are urgently calling for government intervention to stabilize cashew nut prices and alleviate their financial burdens. They have written letters, organized rallies, and voiced their concerns to highlight the challenges they are facing.
In response to the crisis, some farmers have been compelled to sell their cashew nuts at reduced rates, which is an unsustainable solution. It is crucial for the government and other stakeholders to step in and provide assistance to these farmers promptly. Immediate action is required to prevent further distress among the farming community and to safeguard their livelihoods.
