Red Gram is one of the major consuming pulses of Telangana,
Once it was the major crop for the rain-fed area in siddipet district as it could produce high economic yield under low moisture.
Since the last two years due to the Kaleshwaram irrigation project water, the groundwater level has risen, and the area under irrigation increased farmers shifted to paddy crops which are mono-crop hence red gram crops drastically reduced.
Agriculture Extension Officer of Narayanraopet Mandal T.Nagarjun Sensitized the farmers for redgram plantation on paddy field bund. 80 acres of paddy bund are covered with red gram crops.

Red gram is a mini fertilizer factory crop that has the unique character of restoring and maintaining soil fertility through fixing atmospheric nitrogen is symbiotic and associated with rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules.
Attracts the no of beneficial predators and parasitiods especially Trichogramma feed on eggs of yellow stem borer one of the major pests of paddy.
Compared to solo red gram crops, red gram grown on bund are less infested by pests hence application of chemical pesticides is less.
More importantly, farmers get an additional income and good quality pulse for their needs.
