Narmada Nidhi:   In the heart of Madhya Pradesh, at Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University in Jabalpur, a groundbreaking achievement in poultry breeding has taken place. The result is the remarkable ‘Narmada Nidhi’ chicken, a breed that combines the best traits of native and improved chickens to thrive in the rural landscapes of Madhya Pradesh.

This innovative chicken breed, ‘Narmada Nidhi,’ is a combination of two breeds: the sturdy Kadaknath and the colorful Jabalpur Colour. The Kadaknath breed has a strong history in the tribal areas of Jhabua and Alirajpur districts, known for its resilience and local adaptation. On the other hand, the ‘Jabalpur Colour’ breed, developed by Jabalpur University, contributes its characteristics for efficient meat production.

What makes ‘Narmada Nidhi’ chickens stand out are not only their captivating multi-colored feathers, ranging from black and brown to grey tones, but also their strong bodies that help them move easily in free-range environments. They grow faster and produce more than the native chickens, even when given limited food and care.

The growth and reproduction abilities of ‘Narmada Nidhi’ are remarkable. At just 8 weeks, they weigh around 700 to 800 grams, growing efficiently. By 20 weeks, males weigh about 1550 grams, and females reach around 1300 grams. Female ‘Narmada Nidhi’ hens mature around 161 days and lay an impressive 181 eggs in backyard conditions, a stark difference from the 45 eggs native chickens produce. Even with less intensive care, these hens lay around 195 eggs. These eggs are medium-sized and have brown shells.
